St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office investigating homicide in Chalmette
The St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office is investigating the fatal shooting of a male victim that occurred shortly after 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 24 in the 400 block of Pierre Street in Chalmette, Sheriff James Pohlmann said.
Two other male victims who were also shot during the incident were both transported to area hospitals to be treated for non life-threatening injuries.
The investigation is ongoing.

Several hundred St. Bernard Parish fifth-graders recently graduated from the fall semester of the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office’s Drug Abuse Resistance Education program.
Lynn Oaks School had 16 students graduate from the program on Dec. 4, Arabi Elementary held a ceremony Dec. 6 for 86 students, and J.F. Gauthier Elementary had 84 students graduate on Dec. 10. Chalmette Elementary held a ceremony on Dec. 12 for 78 students and Our Lady of Prompt Succor had 39 students graduate on Dec. 17.
Sheriff James Pohlmann said the D.A.R.E. anti-drug program, taught in St. Bernard Parish schools by program supervisor Lt. Lisa Jackson and Sgt. Darrin Miller, is aimed at discouraging youngsters from using drugs, including tobacco and alcohol, or taking part in violence or bullying of others.
During the graduation ceremonies, students heard from Sheriff Pohlmann and other officers who spoke about making the right choices when it comes to the use of drugs or alcohol. The Sheriff stressed the importance of listening to their parents and teachers, and choosing their friends wisely. He also told the students not to bully others, and to report any kind of bullying they witness to an adult or teacher.
Sheriff Pohlmann also addressed parents in attendance about the importance of protecting our future by investing in our children. He praised parents for taking part in keeping their children on the right path and focused on doing the right thing, including talking often with them and looking for warning signs to help prevent drug use.

Times for legal use of fireworks in St. Bernard Parish
According to St. Bernard Parish government ordinance, here are the times when fireworks can legally be used in the parish surrounding the New Year’s celebration:
From Dec. 26 through 30, fireworks can legally be used from 9 a.m. until 11 p.m.
On Dec. 31, they can be used from 9 a.m. until 2 a.m.
On Jan. 1, fireworks can be used from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., at which time all use of fireworks must end for the New Year’s period.
Any use outside these hours would be considered illegal disturbing of the peace.

The St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office recently received a $2,500 donation from Amanda Miller Realty in memory of the late Sterling Joseph “Joey” Cardon III.
The donation will be used to purchase equipment for the department. Accepting the donation on behalf of the Sheriff’s Office is Maj. Walter Dornan.

St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office holds appreciation dinner for Reserve Division deputies
A holiday celebration was held Dec. 5 to honor members of the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office Reserve Division, Sheriff James Pohlmann said.
The dinner, held at The Palms in Arabi, takes place each year to honor the dedication of Reserve Division deputies – unpaid, volunteer officers who supplement the department’s police force in specific situations.
Capt. Charles Borchers, commander of the Reserve Division, said Reserve officers work during large scale events such as festivals, parades and athletic events throughout the parish, as well as performing extra patrols at local businesses during the busy holiday shopping season.
Reserve Dep. Sgt. Sal D’Antoni was recognized at the celebration for having the most hours on duty as a reserve deputy for 2019.
Capt. Borchers, who also serves as head of community relations and longtime Crime-Prevention and Neighborhood Watch director for the Sheriff’s Office, also was honored at the event with a plaque of appreciation for more than four decades of dedicated service.
Capt. Borchers will retire at the end of the year after 45 years in law enforcement, with 31 served at the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office.
Rita and Floyd Gue and Chris Haines and Bill Haines with the Meraux Foundation also were in attendance to present the Sheriff’s Office with a donation for the Reserve Division.
Sheriff Pohlmann thanked the Reserve Division deputies during the banquet for their devoted services.
“We couldn’t do what we do so efficiently without the help of our Reserve Division deputies,” Sheriff Pohlmann said.
Capt. Borchers said there are currently about two dozen Reserve Division deputies, and the department always welcomes new applicants.
“You do not need a background in law enforcement,” Capt. Borchers said. “We provide all training and supply uniforms as well.”
Reserve Division deputies attend an 80-hour basic law enforcement in-service training course, twice a week for 10 weeks. Capt. Borchers said many Reserve Division deputies have gone on to become full-time, paid officers.
To apply, Capt. Borchers said a person must meet the following criteria:
-Live in St. Bernard Parish
-Be at least 21 years old
-Have earned a high school diploma or GED
-Have a clean police record; background checks will be conducted.

St. Bernard Parish residents looking for free expert advice on crime prevention measures for their home or business attended the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office annual “Refuse To Be A Victim” lecture Wednesday, Nov. 13 in the Sheriff’s Office Training Center in Chalmette.
The two-hour class was presented by Capt. Charles Borchers, head of community relations and longtime Crime-Prevention and Neighborhood Watch director for the Sheriff’s Office, Sgt. Eric Eilers, and Dep. Aaron Johnson, who also serves as the Sheriff’s Office chaplain.
“Refuse To Be A Victim,” a nationally recognized program founded in 1993, provides sound advice on how residents can limit their chances of becoming a victim of crime.

2019 St. Bernard Property Tax notices mailed; Due by Dec. 31
The St. Bernard Parish Sheriff’s Office, in accordance with Louisiana law, has mailed the 2019 property tax notices via U.S. mail to parish property owners and the taxes must be paid by Dec. 31 before becoming delinquent.
These notices were mailed to the address on file as provided to the St. Bernard Parish Tax Assessor’s Office.
If anyone receives a tax notice for property they no longer own, please notify the Sheriff’s Civil Tax Office at (504) 271-2504 during regular business hours – Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m.
If a property owner has moved and hasn’t received their 2019 tax bill, they need to call the Sheriff’s Office to give their new mailing address so the tax bill can be sent to them, and they also must call or visit the St. Bernard Tax Assessor’s office to give their permanent address change.
The Tax Assessor’s office is located at 2118 Jackson Blvd., directly behind the Parish Courthouse in Chalmette. The Tax Assessor’s number is (504) 279-6379.
The St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office only maintains the address change for the current mailing. The Assessor’s Office keeps the permanent address.
The Sheriff’s Civil Tax office is located on the second floor of the Sheriff’s Annex, at #2 Courthouse Square in Chalmette. The Annex – which is raised above ground – faces Pakenham Drive and is the second of two buildings directly behind the Courthouse.
The Civil Division office, where such bills are paid, will close at 3 p.m. on Dec. 20 and will be closed Dec. 23 through Dec. 26 for the Christmas holiday. The office will re-open at 8:30 a.m. on Dec. 27.
The office also will close Dec. 31 for the New Year’s holiday and will re-open at 8:30 a.m. on Jan. 2.
There is a drop box at the front entrance to the building for after-hours use. Tax bills can also be paid online on the Sheriff’s Office website at www.sbso.org. Go to the left side of the front page to a tan-colored box near the top which says Pay Property Taxes.

St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office deputy honored by local Performing Arts Center
The Devoted Performing Arts Center in Chalmette recently held an online Facebook contest to honor a St. Bernard Parish Sheriff’s Office deputy.
The center, which provides cheer, dance and music lessons for children, holds online contests several times throughout the year to honor veterans, deputies, firefighters, emergency medical technicians and paramedics for their service to the community. Facebook users are asked to nominate their favorite deputy, and the winner is selected by random draw from all names submitted.
St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office Dep. Barry Johnson, who works in the Field Operations Bureau’s Patrol Division 2nd Platoon, was the most recent honoree. Dep. Johnson was presented with a $75 gift certificate to Barney’s Police Supplies in Metairie by Rachel Roussel, visionary leader at Devoted Performing Arts Center.
