St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office holds Drug Take-Back Day
Residents properly disposed of nearly 40 pounds of unwanted or expired prescriptions and over-the-counter medications on Saturday, April 27 as the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office participated in the annual National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day, Sheriff James Pohlmann said.
Narcotics officers with the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office accepted the unwanted medications over a four-hour period at the Special Investigations Division substation, 7001 W. Judge Perez Drive in Arabi.
Over the past year, the Sheriff’s Office has collected nearly 120 pounds of unwanted medication from residents in an effort to ensure they don’t fall into the hands of youngsters who might misuse them or thieves who could sell them on our streets, the Sheriff said.
The Drug Take Back initiative, part of a national effort spearheaded by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, has seen more than 4.8 million pounds of prescription drugs collected nationwide since its inception in 2010.
The goal of the initiative is to have a location in every Louisiana parish where residents can drop off unwanted medications at any time in an effort to fight the opioid epidemic.
Sheriff Pohlmann said residents who could not make the recent Drug Take Back Day can properly dispose of unwanted medications year-round at the Sheriff’s Office substation located at 4700 Paris Road in Chalmette.
The drop box located at the Paris Road substation was installed as part of an initiative by state Attorney General Jeff Landry, Blue Cross Blue Shield and the National Association of Drug Diversion Investigators.

A New Orleans woman was arrested in St. Bernard Parish after she sent her 5-year-old child alone in a transportation service vehicle, Sheriff James Pohlmann said.
Reiona Oliver, 27, of the 2300 block of 4th Street in New Orleans, was booked April 23 with child desertion after she placed her 5-year-old child in a transportation service vehicle and instructed the driver to take the child from a residence in Chalmette to school in New Orleans.
On Tuesday, April 23, shortly after 9 a.m., Sheriff Pohlmann said, a driver with a local transportation service company brought a 5-year-old child to a Sheriff’s Office substation in Arabi to seek assistance after he told a woman who had summoned a ride for the child that he could not take the child unaccompanied by an adult.
According to the driver, when he arrived at the Chalmette residence in the 1000 block of East St. Avide, the woman, later identified as Oliver, placed the child in the vehicle, and stated she wouldn’t be riding along. The driver said the woman went back into the residence and did not return.
Oliver was taken into custody and transported to St. Bernard Parish Prison where she was booked on the above charge.
A criminal history check was conducted on Oliver which revealed she had two outstanding warrants out of Jefferson Parish for traffic attachments.

The St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office arrested a Chalmette man for robbing at gunpoint a Chalmette bar on April 13, Sheriff James Pohlmann said.
Benjamin Jefferson, 26, of the 3500 block of Chalona Drive, was booked with April 17 with armed robbery for robbing at gunpoint an employee at Backyard Bar and Grill, 1351 E. St. Bernard Highway.
On April 13, shortly before 6:30 p.m., Sheriff Pohlmann said, a male subject, later identified as Jefferson, entered the bar, brandished a handgun and demanded cash from the register. Jefferson, who stole an undetermined amount of cash, fled the scene.
Sheriff Pohlmann said no one was injured in the incident.
Detectives with the Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Bureau were able to identify Jefferson through video surveillance and eyewitness statements. He was apprehended April 17 at his home and taken into custody.
Jefferson is being held in St. Bernard Parish Prison on a $500,000 bond.

The St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office is seeking assistance from the public in locating and identifying a person of interest who may have been involved in an armed robbery that occurred on Saturday, April 13 at Backyard Bar and Grill, 1351 E. St. Bernard Highway in Chalmette, Sheriff James Pohlmann said.
On April 13, shortly before 6:30 p.m., Sheriff Pohlmann said, a male subject entered the bar, brandished a handgun and demanded cash from the register. The suspect stole an undetermined amount of cash, and fled the scene.
Sheriff Pohlmann said no one was injured in the incident.
The person of interest is a black male, approximately 6’ tall with a thin build. He is believed to live within close proximity of the bar.
Anyone with information regarding the suspect’s identity, his whereabouts or further information regarding this incident is asked to call the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office at (504) 271-2501 or Crimestoppers GNO at (504) 822-1111. to distribute marijuana, child endangerment after domestic disturbance
A Chalmette man was arrested April 15 on various charges, including possession with intent to distribute marijuana and child endangerment, following a domestic dispute with the mother of his children, St. Bernard Sheriff James Pohlmann said. A handgun also was recovered in the incident.
Wilbert Green, 36, of the 2200 block of Volpe Drive in Chalmette, was booked with possession with intent to distribute marijuana, possession with intent to distribute THC, two counts of child endangerment, and illegal carrying of a weapon.
On April 15, at approximately 11 a.m., Sheriff Pohlmann said, deputies responded to a call about a domestic disturbance in the 2200 block of Volpe Drive in Chalmette.
When deputies arrived on the scene, they were met by a female who stated she had been in a verbal altercation with her children’s father, later identified as Green.
During the course of the investigation, deputies detected a strong odor of marijuana emitting from the residence. Based on their findings, detectives with the Criminal Investigations Bureau obtained a search warrant for the residence.
Detectives recovered a large amount of prepackaged, edible food items containing THC, numerous hand-rolled marijuana cigarettes, and a glass jar containing melted butter which contained cooked marijuana. The estimated street value for the edible items and narcotics is $3,400.
A 32 revolver handgun and $780 in cash were also recovered, Sheriff Pohlmann said.
Green was apprehended on the scene after he was found hiding in the attic of the residence. He was transported to St. Bernard Parish to be booked on the above charges.

The St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office is recruiting Junior Deputies.
Are you a St. Bernard Parish youth between the ages of 10 and 13 who is looking for something fun and exciting to do this summer? Are you interested in learning valuable skills needed to be law-abiding citizens with good moral character and integrity?
If so, the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office wants you to join its annual Junior Deputy program. Registration is now open.
Formed in 2015, the Junior Deputy Academy is designed to foster community pride and self esteem in boys and girls while teaching them about various aspects of police work.
“Our Junior Deputy Academy program affords children a chance to learn something about law enforcement and have some fun at the same time,” St. Bernard Parish Sheriff James Pohlmann said. “It’s designed to help them develop pride and self-respect for themselves, as well as their community and our law enforcement officers.”
The Junior Deputy Academy, which is patterned after the Sheriff’s Office Citizens Police Academy for adults, will be held two days a week, from June 4 to July 11, at the Sheriff’s Office Training Center, on the second floor at 2118 Jackson Blvd. in Chalmette, immediately behind the Parish Courthouse.
Classes will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 to 3 p.m. on June 4 and 6, June 11 and 13, June 18 and 20, June 25 and 27, and July 9 and 11. A graduation ceremony is set for July 17 at noon at Docville Farms, 5124 E. St. Bernard Highway in Violet.
The program is led by Capt. Charles Borchers, head of community relations and longtime Crime-Prevention and Neighborhood Watch director for the Sheriff’s Office, and Sgt. Eric Eilers.
During the program, Sheriff Pohlmann said, deputies from various divisions of the Sheriff’s Office visit with participants during the course of the program, including Patrol, Narcotics, Marine and Criminal Investigations divisions.
Participants will visit St. Bernard Parish Prison, and will be shown some of the department’s state-of-the-art equipment. They also will be taught firearms safety at a local shooting range, and will learn basic first aid and CPR. Members of the St. Bernard Fire Department also participate in the program.
Participants will receive official Junior Deputy T-shirts and badges.

St. Bernard Sheriff James Pohlmann and the men and women of the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office were on patrol along the parade route for the 2019 St. Bernard Irish, Italian, Islenos parade held April 6 in Chalmette.
This year’s parade featured nearly 50 floats with 1,000-plus riders throwing more than 500,000 pounds of produce. There also were more than 30 marching units in the parade.
St. Bernard Parish President Guy McInnis and his wife Laurie reigned as this year’s King and Queen. Congressman Steve Scalise was the 2019 Grand Marshal, and Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser was an honorary guest.
