in connection with residential armed robbery in Violet

The St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office is seeking assistance from the public in locating and identifying three male suspects who robbed at gunpoint a Violet family in their home, Sheriff James Pohlmann said.

During the early morning hours of Sept. 26, Sheriff Pohlmann said, deputies responded to a call about an armed robbery which took place in the Daniel Park area in Violet.

According to the female victim, three black males entered her home and held her and her three children at gunpoint for an extended period of time while they ransacked their home. The suspects tied up the female before they left and fled with her debit card.

Shortly after the incident, the Sheriff said, video surveillance was obtained of one of the male suspects using the victim's debit card to withdraw money at a Chase ATM in eastern New Orleans.

Anyone with information regarding the identity of these three suspects, their whereabouts or further information regarding this incident is asked to call the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office at (504) 271-2501 or (504) 278-7630 or Crimestoppers GNO at (504) 822-1111. St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office searching for two male

suspects in rash of vehicle burglaries in Arabi

The St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office is seeking assistance from the public in locating and identifying two male suspects who are wanted in connection with a rash of automobile burglaries which took place Monday evening in St. Bernard Parish, Sheriff James Pohlmann said.

On Sept. 30, shortly after 7:30 p.m., several vehicles were burglarized along several residential streets in the Arabi area.

A warrant has been issued in the case by detectives with the Criminal Investigations Bureau for the arrest of Alkia Edwards, 17, of the 4800 block of Rosemont Drive in New Orleans. He is wanted for simple burglary and theft of a firearm.

Sheriff Pohlmann said the investigation is ongoing, and additional charges are pending.

Anyone with information regarding the identity of these two suspects, their whereabouts or further information regarding these incidents is asked to call the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Bureau at (504) 278-7630 or Crimestoppers GNO at (504) 822-1111. Tipsters who call Crimestoppers can remain anonymous, do not have to testify and could be eligible for a cash reward.

In several cases, Sheriff Pohlmann said, the victims’ vehicles were unlocked.

Sheriff Pohlmann urges residents to keep their vehicles locked at all times in an effort to deter criminals from committing a “crime of opportunity.”

“This is why it’s very important to make sure your vehicles are locked at all times,” Sheriff Pohlmann said. “Locking your vehicle and not leaving items of value, especially guns, in plain sight can greatly reduce your chances of being a victim of theft.”

St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office Lt. Jennifer Gutierrez
named Kiwanis Club District Lawperson of Year

St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office Lt. Jennifer Gutierrez was recently named the 2018-19 Kiwanis LAMISSTENN District’s International Lawperson of the Year, Sheriff James Pohlmann said.

Lt. Gutierrez, who received the Kiwanis Club of St. Bernard-Arabi Life Saver Award in January of 2019, was selected from a group of nominees submitted by Kiwanis clubs over a tri-state area.

Each year, the Kiwanis LAMISSTENN District, which includes Louisiana, Mississippi and western Tennessee, asks individual chapters to nominate one of their Life Saver Award recipients to be named the Lawperson of the Year.

Kiwanis Club of St. Bernard-Arabi Life Saver Committee Chairman Sam Catalanotto said their nominee, Lt. Gutierrez, a 20-year law enforcement veteran, was selected from all of the nominees to receive this honor.

Lt. Gutierrez began her career with the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office in 1999 working at the Parish Prison as a member of the Corrections Division. In 2001, she became a school resource officer where she worked for three years.

In 2004, Lt. Gutierrez became a detective with the Criminal Investigations Bureau where she still works today. She also is a recent graduate of the American International Institute of Polygraph where she became a certified forensic psychophysiologist.

Lt. Gutierrez is touched to receive such an honor.

“It’s a great honor to be the first deputy in St. Bernard Parish to receive this award, and to be recognized among so many other nominees throughout the district,” Lt. Gutierrez said.

In addition to presenting Lt. Gutierrez with the award, the Kiwanis also made a $250 donation to a charity of her choice. Lt. Gutierrez chose The League of Angels, a sports league for St. Bernard Parish children and adults with special needs. Michael Chutz, a member of the Kiwanis Club of St. Bernard-Arabi and a member of the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office Reserve Division, also made a $100 personal donation to The League of Angels.

Anyone interested in joining the St. Bernard/Arabi Kiwanis Club community service organization is welcome to attend one of its luncheons each Tuesday at noon in the Rocky and Carlo’s Sicilian Room, 613 W.
