St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office books New Orleans man with 2nd degree murder in connection with May 4 homicide in Chalmette

The St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office arrested a New Orleans man for 2nd degree murder in connection with a fatal shooting that took place May 4 in Chalmette, Sheriff James Pohlmann said.

Matthew Squyres, 35, of the 7200 block of Chef Menteur Highway in eastern New Orleans, was booked May 6 with second degree murder for fatally shooting a Chalmette man in his home.

Around 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 4, Sheriff Pohlmann said, deputies responded to a call about a shooting in the 3600 block of Shangri-La Drive in Chalmette.

When deputies arrived on the scene they observed bullet holes in the window of the residence. After a failed attempt to summon someone to the door, deputies made entry into the residence where they found an adult male victim lying on the floor, suffering from fatal gunshot wounds.

After an extensive investigation, detectives with the Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Bureau were able to identify Squyres and he was apprehended May 6 in Chalmette.

Once in custody, Squyres confessed to the murder and was transported to St. Bernard Parish Prison where he is being held. Bond has not yet been set.

Sheriff Pohlmann said no one else was injured during this isolated incident between two acquaintances who had been involved in a prior altercation.
