SBSO NEEDS PUBLIC’S HELP IDENTIFYING MAN WANTED FOR THEFT

The St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s help in identifying an adult male who is wanted for stealing a wallet out of a woman’s purse while she was shopping at a Chalmette business last week, St. Bernard Sheriff James Pohlmann said.

On Sunday, May 29, 2022, Sheriff Pohlmann said, deputies with the Field Operations Bureau Patrol Division responded to a call for service from a resident who said her wallet had been stolen and her credit card was used to make unauthorized purchases at several businesses.

During the course of the investigation, detectives with the Criminal Investigations Bureau obtained video surveillance of the incident that occured on May 29 around 1:30 p.m. at a business in the 8400 block of West Judge Perez Drive in Chalmette.

The video showed the male suspect reach into the victim’s purse while she wasn’t looking, retrieve her wallet and then leave the business shortly after.

Detectives also learned the suspect used the victim’s credit card to purchase merchandise and several Visa gift cards from at least two local businesses.

The suspect is a black male who appears to be at least 6’ tall. He was seen driving a white older model Ford Escape.

Anyone knowing the identity and/or whereabouts of this suspect, or any other information relating to this incident is asked to call the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office at (504) 271-2501, the Criminal Investigations Bureau’s tip hotline at (504) 271-TIPS or 8477, or Crimestoppers GNO at (504) 822-1111. Callers to the CIB tip hotline or Crimestoppers can remain anonymous and could be eligible for a cash award from Crimestoppers.
