St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office Lt. Jennifer Gutierrez
named Kiwanis Club District Lawperson of Year

St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office Lt. Jennifer Gutierrez was recently named the 2018-19 Kiwanis LAMISSTENN District’s International Lawperson of the Year, Sheriff James Pohlmann said.

Lt. Gutierrez, who received the Kiwanis Club of St. Bernard-Arabi Life Saver Award in January of 2019, was selected from a group of nominees submitted by Kiwanis clubs over a tri-state area.

Each year, the Kiwanis LAMISSTENN District, which includes Louisiana, Mississippi and western Tennessee, asks individual chapters to nominate one of their Life Saver Award recipients to be named the Lawperson of the Year.

Kiwanis Club of St. Bernard-Arabi Life Saver Committee Chairman Sam Catalanotto said their nominee, Lt. Gutierrez, a 20-year law enforcement veteran, was selected from all of the nominees to receive this honor.

Lt. Gutierrez began her career with the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office in 1999 working at the Parish Prison as a member of the Corrections Division. In 2001, she became a school resource officer where she worked for three years.

In 2004, Lt. Gutierrez became a detective with the Criminal Investigations Bureau where she still works today. She also is a recent graduate of the American International Institute of Polygraph where she became a certified forensic psychophysiologist.

Lt. Gutierrez is touched to receive such an honor.

“It’s a great honor to be the first deputy in St. Bernard Parish to receive this award, and to be recognized among so many other nominees throughout the district,” Lt. Gutierrez said.

In addition to presenting Lt. Gutierrez with the award, the Kiwanis also made a $250 donation to a charity of her choice. Lt. Gutierrez chose The League of Angels, a sports league for St. Bernard Parish children and adults with special needs. Michael Chutz, a member of the Kiwanis Club of St. Bernard-Arabi and a member of the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office Reserve Division, also made a $100 personal donation to The League of Angels.

Anyone interested in joining the St. Bernard/Arabi Kiwanis Club community service organization is welcome to attend one of its luncheons each Tuesday at noon in the Rocky and Carlo’s Sicilian Room, 613 W. St. Bernard Highway in Chalmette. For more information, call Robby Showalter at (504) 616-7312.

Register your Night Out Against Crime party with the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Offic

Register your Night Out Against Crime party with the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office

There’s no doubt St. Bernard Parish is one of the safest communities around the New Orleans metropolitan area. While St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office deputies do a fine job of protecting our residents, citizens also can play a pivotal role in making their hometown a safe place to live and raise a family.

One such way residents can get involved is to host or attend a gathering in their neighborhood in observance of National Night Out Against Crime.

On Tuesday, Oct. 15, the 36th annual event will be held locally in an effort to strengthen neighborhood bonds and increase crime prevention awareness, Sheriff James Pohlmann said.

“We encourage residents to get together as a way to show they want to take a stand against crime,” the Sheriff said. “It’s a great way to foster relationships between neighbors and fight crime in their neighborhood.”

St. Bernard residents who plan to host Night Out Against Crime parties are encouraged to register their gathering with the Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff Pohlmann and Sheriff’s Office deputies will visit various gatherings on the evening of the 15th to meet residents and answer any questions they may have about law enforcement issues and crime prevention.

Although National Night Out is held in August across the country, several local leaders in Southeast Louisiana opted in 2011 to move the event to October to escape the summer heat.

Capt. Charles Borchers, head of community relations and longtime Crime-Prevention and Neighborhood Watch director for the Sheriff’s Office, said about two dozen events are held in St. Bernard each year, some at churches and public places, as well as at private homes.

For more information about Night Out Against Crime activities or to register your gathering, call Capt. Borchers at (504) 278-7628 or Sgt. Eric Eilers at (504) 278-7799.
