St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office arrests Baton Rouge man and Violet woman in connection with shooting in Violet

The St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office arrested a Baton Rouge man and a Violet woman in connection with a shooting that occurred Aug. 8 on Stacie Drive in Violet, Sheriff James Pohlmann said.

Charles McElveen, 25, of the 4600 block of South Park in Baton Rouge, was booked with attempted second degree murder, convicted felon in possession of a firearm, and illegal discharge of a firearm.

Micale Hensley, 22, of the 2900 block of Stacie Drive in Violet, was booked with accessory to attempted second degree murder.

On Aug. 8, around 8:30 p.m., Sheriff Pohlmann said, deputies responded to a call about a shooting in the 2900 block of Stacie Drive in Violet.

When deputies arrived on the scene, a male victim suffering from two gunshot wounds, one to the hip and another to the leg near the groin area, was being transported to University Hospital to be treated for his injuries.

Based on information obtained by eyewitnesses, detectives with the Criminal Investigations Bureau determined the suspect, identified as McElveen, had fled the scene with Hensley. Both McElveen and Hensley were apprehended shortly after.

During the course of the investigation, detectives learned McElveen and the victim, who are acquaintances, had been involved in a verbal altercation and both brandished weapons and fired shots at each other.

Sheriff Pohlmann said this was an isolated incident, no one else was injured and one of the weapons, a Smith & Wesson .9mm, was recovered.

A criminal history check was conducted on both suspects, which revealed McElveen is a convicted felon currently on parole for a homicide conviction.

The investigation is ongoing and additional charges may be filed.

St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office kicks off 21st session of its Citizens Police Academy

The 21st session of the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office Citizens Police Academy kicked off Wednesday, Aug. 21 with two dozen residents ready and eager to learn about the multiple aspects of police work.

Participants heard from Sheriff James Pohlmann who said the program will provide them with the opportunity to learn more about what the men and women of the Sheriff’s Office do on a day-to-day basis to keep their community safe.

“This course will give you an insight on how and why things are handled in a certain manner,” Sheriff Pohlmann said to the participants. “Its purpose is to foster a positive relationship between our citizens and our officers.”

Coordinated by Capt. Charles Borchers, Sgt. Eric Eilers and Dep. Aaron Johnson, the 10-week course will include visits from veteran representatives of each division of the Sheriff’s Office who will speak on the various phases of law enforcement, including patrol work, narcotics enforcement, detective duties, and SWAT team demonstrations.

Participants also will visit the Parish Courthouse and Prison to see what those environments are like. A graduation ceremony will be held Oct. 23 for participants who complete the course.

Capt. Borchers said several hundred parish residents have participated in the Citizens Police Academy since its inception in 1998.

“It’s really become a popular course among adults,” he said. “This program gives residents a real feel for what police work entails and it’s about as realistic as we can make it for them.”

For more information about the program, call Sgt. Eilers at (504) 278-7799.

St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office arrest Meraux man for burglaries, vehicle theft

A Meraux man was arrested for entering a residence in his own neighborhood and stealing several items, including a vehicle, and also attempting to enter several other residences, St. Bernard Sheriff James Pohlmann said.

Deiontae Moore, 21, of the 3000 block of Fable Drive in Meraux, was booked Aug. 20 with simple burglary of an inhabited dwelling, several counts of attempted simple burglary of a residence, vehicular burglary and theft of an automobile.

Based on information provided by residents of the Story Park neighborhood, and video surveillance footage, Sheriff Pohlmann said, detectives with the Criminal Investigations Bureau obtained a search warrant on Aug. 20 for Moore’s residence where they found evidence linking him to the crimes.

In the early morning hours of Aug. 14, Sheriff Pohlmann said, Moore was seen on video surveillance entering a home in the 3100 block of Fable Drive. Moore stole two laptops, an iPad and keys to a vehicle that he also stole.

Moore also was captured on video surveillance attempting to break into three homes in the 3200 block of Story Park Boulevard and two in the 3100 and 3200 blocks of Fable Drive.

Moore was transported to St. Bernard Parish Prison to be booked on the above charges. The investigation is ongoing and additional charges will be filed.

Sheriff Pohlmann said this case was solved quickly thanks to concerned residents in the area cooperating with detectives.

“Thanks to the residents’ desire to protect their neighborhood against crime, our detectives were able to quickly apprehend this suspect,” the Sheriff said.

This proves the importance of the “see something, say something” rule, the Sheriff said.

“If you witness someone suspicious in your neighborhood, or even someone you know doing something that seems out of the ordinary, we encourage you to report it to us,” the Sheriff said. “No matter how small, we need to check out all instances such as these to ensure the safety of our residents.”

St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office warns residents of phone scam

St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office warns residents of phone scam

St. Bernard Sheriff James Pohlmann would like to inform residents of a phone scam that has been brought to his attention.

Victims have reported receiving a phone call stating they must wire $250 or a warrant will be issued for their arrest due to their failure to appear for jury duty.

The caller, who claims to be a deputy with the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office, instructs the victim to wire the money, then bring the receipt to the St. Bernard Parish Courthouse to void the warrant and avoid arrest.

Sheriff Pohlmann wants residents to know the majority of the time a valid arrest warrant is served in person by law enforcement officials; however, in some circumstances a law enforcement official may call you if you have a warrant, but under no circumstances will that officer ever ask anyone to wire money for any form of payment.

If you have received a call from someone claiming to be a deputy with the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office asking you to wire money, call the Sheriff’s Office at (504) 271-2501.
