St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office D.A.R.E. program graduation
Several hundred St. Bernard Parish fifth-graders will graduate from the fall semester of the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office’s Drug Abuse Resistance Education program.
Forty-nine students graduated from W. Smith Jr. Elementary School’s program on Dec. 5, and a graduation was held Dec. 7 at Joseph Davies Elementary for 133 students. Lacoste Elementary School will hold its ceremony Dec. 14, followed by Our Lady of Prompt Succor on Dec. 17 and Meraux Elementary School on Dec. 18.
Sheriff James Pohlmann said the D.A.R.E. anti-drug program, taught in St. Bernard Parish schools by program supervisor Lt. Lisa Jackson and Sgt. Darrin Miller, is aimed at discouraging youngsters from using drugs, including tobacco and alcohol, or taking part in violence or the bullying of others.
During the graduation ceremonies, students hear from Sheriff Pohlmann who speaks about making the right choices when it comes to the use of drugs or alcohol. The Sheriff stresses the importance of listening to their parents and teachers and choosing their friends wisely. He also tells children not to bully others, and to report any kind of bullying they witness to an adult or teacher.
Sheriff Pohlmann also addresses parents in attendance about the importance of protecting our future by investing in our children. He praises parents for taking part in keeping their children on the right path and focused on doing the right thing, including talking often with them and looking for warning signs to help prevent drug use.
St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office holds appreciation dinner for Reserve Division
A celebration was held Dec. 6 at The Palms, Too in Arabi to honor members of the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office Reserve Division, Sheriff James Pohlmann said.
The purpose of the event is to recognize the dedication of the Reserve Division deputies – unpaid, volunteer officers who supplement the department’s police force in specific situations.
Capt. Charles Borchers, commander of the Reserve Division, said Reserve officers work during large scale events such as festivals, parades and athletic events throughout the parish, as well as performing extra patrols at local businesses during the busy holiday shopping season.
During the banquet, Sgt. Chris Palazzalo, a deputy with the Reserve Division since 2012, was recognized with a Commendation Award for having the most hours worked and demonstrating exceptional leadership skills and dedication to the Reserve Division.
Rita and Floyd Gue and Chris and Bill Haines with the Meraux Foundation attended the event and presented the Sheriff’s Office with a generous donation for the Reserve Division.
Sheriff Pohlmann thanked the Reserve Division deputies during the banquet for their devoted services.
“We couldn’t do what we do so efficiently without the help of our Reserve Division deputies,” Sheriff Pohlmann said.
Capt. Borchers said there are currently about two dozen Reserve Division deputies, and the department always welcomes new applicants.
“You do not need a background in law enforcement,” Capt. Borchers said. “We provide all training and supply uniforms as well.”
Reserve Division deputies attend an 80-hour basic law enforcement in-service training course, twice a week for 10 weeks. Capt. Borchers said many Reserve Division deputies have gone on to become full-time, paid officers.
To apply, Capt. Borchers said a person must meet the following criteria:
-Live in St. Bernard Parish
-Be at least 21 years old
-Have earned a high school diploma or GED
-Have a clean police record; background checks will be conducted.
For more information, or to obtain an application, contact Capt. Borchers at (504) 278-7628 or Sgt. Eric Eilers at (504) 278-7799.

New Orleans man suffers a broken leg after fleeing
in a stolen vehicle from St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office deputies
A New Orleans man driving a stolen vehicle suffered a broken leg after fleeing from St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office deputies attempting to make a traffic stop, Sheriff James Pohlmann said.
Corey Greathouse, 28, of the 1400 block of Clouet Street, was transported to University Medical Center to be treated for a broken leg after he led deputies on a chase into New Orleans and jumped into an empty drainage canal while trying to flee on foot.
After Greathouse is treated for non-life threatening injuries, he will be transported to St. Bernard Parish Prison to be booked with possession of stolen property, flight from an officer and reckless operation.
At approximately 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 21, Sheriff Pohlmann said, deputies responded to a call about a white 2004 Mitsubishi Outlander listed as stolen out of New Orleans being spotted in Arabi.
Deputies attempted to make a traffic stop on the vehicle near the intersection of Judge Perez Drive and Rowley Boulevard, but the driver, later identified as Greathouse, refused to stop and led deputies on a pursuit into the Ninth Ward in New Orleans.
When Greathouse came upon an impassable construction site near the corner of Alvar Street and Florida Avenue, he abandoned the stolen vehicle and fled on foot. While fleeing from deputies, Greathouse jumped into an empty drainage canal, falling nearly 20 feet and sustaining a broken leg.
Greathouse was apprehended by deputies and transported to the hospital.
Sheriff Pohlmann said no one else was injured in the incident.
